Mary Koss

A professor at the University of Arizona, Mary Koss has conducted pioneering research in the fields of gender-based violence and restorative justice. She conducted the first national, large-scale survey on rape in the United States. Credited with coining terms such as “date rape,” “hidden rape,” and “unacknowledged rape,” she has greatly impacted the way violence against women is conceptualised and addressed in public policy in the United States.

Mary Koss is the founder of RESTORE, a restorative justice program at the University of Arizona. She has been a key advisor for The Centre for Restoration since its inception in 2021 as a task force.
